A Truly Global Day at the Quarry

Today, our quiet quarry came alive with voices from around the world, as we welcomed a vibrant group of international visitors—palaeontologists and geologists from the US, Canada, China, Lithuania, Estonia, Czechia, and many more—here to explore the remarkable geological heritage of our area. Their visit was part of the International pale Conference, brilliantly organised by Joe Botting and Lucy Muir, whose dedication turned the day into an unforgettable experience.

The quarry echoed with the rhythmic tapping of hammers on stone, as fossils—found nowhere else on Earth—were eagerly uncovered and admired. The day continued with a guided walk up to Cefnllys Castle guided by Julian Ravest where the group learned not only about the ancient Motte and Bailey castle remains, but also about the deep geological story beneath their feet. With panoramic views stretching across the landscape, Lucy Muir seamlessly wove together history with geology, bringing both the rocks and ruins to life.
