A Guided Tour of Cefnllys Castle with Julian Ravest

Today, members of the International Palaeontology Conference visiting the area were treated to a fascinating guided walk up to Cefnllys Castle, led by Julian Ravest. The climb itself was richly rewarding, with ever-widening views across the Radnorshire countryside and plenty of pauses along the way to take in both the scenery and the stories woven into the landscape.

At the castle site, the group explored the evocative remains of the ancient motte and bailey fortification, learning about its strategic importance, turbulent past, and the people who once lived and worked there. Alongside the history, Lucy Muir brought the deep geological story beneath our feet vividly to life, revealing how hundreds of millions of years of shifting seas, sediment and upheaval shaped the land we see today. Together, history and geology were seamlessly intertwined, turning a simple walk into a richly layered journey through time, set against a backdrop of panoramic views and crisp winter air.
